Kala Chana, also known as black chickpeas or desi chana, is a popular pulse prized for its distinct earthy flavour and nutty taste. Darker and smaller than standard yellow chickpeas, these whole black garbanzo beans hold their firm, toothsome texture exceptionally well during long, slow cooking.
Widely used across Indian, South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine, whole brown chickpeas add substance and rich flavour to a variety of traditional dishes. They are ideal for:
- Kala Chana Masala: A classic, gently spiced curry cooked with tomatoes, ginger, cumin and dry spices.
- Chana Chaat: Boiled and tossed with chopped onions, fresh tomatoes, coriander, green chillies and tangy chaat masala.
- Hearty Soups & Stews: Simmered in rustic vegetable broths or mixed pulse dishes where they absorb seasonings without turning mushy.

Preparation Tip: Soak Kala Chana in plenty of cold water overnight (or for 8 to 10 hours) before cooking. Drain and boil in fresh water for 45 to 60 minutes, or pressure cook until tender, before adding to your favourite recipes.
